Two COPL's Members honored by OSA
The Centre for Optics, Photonics and Lasers (COPL) is pleased to announce that two of its members have recently been honoured by the Optical Society of America (OSA). Réal Vallée, COPL Director and Professor at Université Laval, and Lawrence Chen, COPL Management Committee Member and Professor at McGill University, have been elected OSA Fellows. With this honour reserved to only 10% of its members, OSA recognizes Prof. Vallée’s leadership in expanding Canadian photonics academic and research infrastructure and his significant contributions in developing the first infrared fluoride fibre laser. Professor Chen is being recognized for his contributions to optical fiber communications, in particular fiber Bragg gratings, optical code-division multiple-access and pulse shaping. The COPL congratulates them both for this great distinction.
China Mission 2011
The Quebec Photonic Network (RPQ), together with the Canadian Photonics Consortium (CPC) and the Ministry of Economic Development Innovation and Export Trade (MDEIE), organized a Québec - Ontario China mission held from October 25 to November 5. A total of 12 companies and organizations across Canada participated in this mission.
The mission program included visits and business meetings in three major cities, which are Beijing, Shanghai and Wuhan, plus participations to exhibits at ILOPE 2011 (Beijing), and OVC EXPO 2011 (Wuhan), in a Canada Pavilion, with also presentations at the conference POEM 2011 (Wuhan). According to participants, this mission was a success, with three contracts signed and 149 serious contacts developed, which will open the door to successful business in the future.
Photonics industrial research network
The MDEIE has launched a call for proposal in order to support 2 new Networks oriented towards Industrial Research. A Financial Support for each of 1.5M$ per year for the research program, and an additional 750 k$ for the management of the network and the animation of the community will be awarded.
